The Quasar Expedition

Captain Infinity poured himself a cup of coffee and mentally prepared himself for another painfully boring day.

~There is nothing to do out here.~

As soon as the thought entered his mind, he remembered the Magnate's words "No matter how mundane it may seem, your expedition may shape the fate of the universe."

Infinity didn't usually trust old mystics like Council Magnate Switch. To be honest, if the Magnate hadn't visited him with the legendary Dr. Fenix himself, Infinity probably would've told him to get lost... at least until he heard his generous offer.

During their first few weeks at the Quasar, its enormity and beauty was enough to keep the whole crew giddy. But 5 months is a long time to for his crew to do... nothing.

Of course not everyone on the ship was doing nothing.... Just his original crew. The Magnate and Dr's team were always busy with their instruments, relics, and experiments... or maybe rituals? Half of the team were crazy mystics, and the other half were the galaxy's sharpest scientists.

~They must be doing something worthwhile, right? At least the money's good. Plus 'Cosmic Explorer Infinity' really does have nice ring to it.~

Another month of doing nothing and maybe he would put and end to the mission.

...

"Excuse me Mr. Infinite, I require a moment of your time."

"It's Captai... Oh what the hell, what do you need Fin?"

"My team requires that we move... a bit closer to the event horizon."

"Closer? I can't put my crew at risk! The Quasar could tear our ship to pieces. No, we stay here."

"Mr... I mean Captain Infinity, I beg you to listen. The Fantomons we brought with us.... Here, it is better that I show you."

Ent Mystic Fin ran back to the lab to where they kept the Fantomons in a safe enclosure. Infinity followed reluctantly. The peaceful Jixpi he had seen them bring aboard was ten times its original size, and was very clearly yearning to escape captivity. No wait.... It didn't just want to escape. It was trying to reach closer to the Quasar.

Every few seconds the Jixpi would shimmer, disappear and reappear a moment later looking exasperated. It was as if the very fabric of space-time was drawing this creature towards the Quasar.

"Our souls, our very existence is eternally bound to these creatures. And they have an ancient wisdom that we have only begun to decipher." Dr. Fenix had told him.

The Magnate's words echoed once more, "...your expedition may shape the fate of the universe."

His crew knew they signed up for something big, and so did he. Maybe they would finally see some action.

"Do it. Crew, prepare the ship! We are moving closer to the Quasar. Divert all power to hull integrity and thrusters. We won't let the Quasar tear us apart!"

~Let's shape history.~
